BSc, MSc, EngD, AIEMAProgramme Director, Surrey/Brunel EngD in Environmental Technology
Lecturer
Short Biography:
Lucia joined the University of Surrey in April 2004. She is a Lecturer in Environmental Strategy at CES and is the Programme Director for the EPSRC-funded Surrey/Brunel Engineering Doctorate in Environmental Technology. She has over 14 years experience in dealing with environmental and sustainability issues, which has included research, consultancy, policy development and regulatory roles. She is a former member of EPSRC Peer Review College (2003-2005) and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.
Research Interests:
Lucia’s research interests are related to providing support for sustainable development decisions, which includes practical applications of industrial ecology and life cycle approaches. She has applied this experience primarily in built environment, transport infrastructure, energy and waste management sectors.
Research Collaborations:
Lucia is also currently involved in supervision/co-supervision of 2 PhD and 6 EngD students, conducting research in the following areas: contaminated land management and planning, decision support, life cycle approaches, resource and waste management policy, sustainable development policy. Sponsors include EDF Energy, Forest Research, Hewlett Packard, Rolls-Royce Defence, Steel Construction Institute, TRL Limited, Tony Gee and Partners.
Past projects:
CCaLC (Carbon Calculations over the Life Cycle), 2004-06. Funded by EPSRC/ NERC/ Carbon Trust, with “in kind” contributions from many industrial partners. Responsible for managing one of 4 case studies on building materials as CI, including co-ordinating the input of industrial partners as a steering group (PI Prof Adisa Azapagic, CI Prof Roland Clift, CI Dr Sarah Cowell). Organisations involved in the Building Materials case study included Steel Construction Institute, British Cement Association, British Precast, Brick Development Association.
SPORT (Sustainable Plastic to Olefin Recycling Technology), 2005-06. Funded by DTI and Industrial Partners. Objectives were to investigate efficient polymer cracking processes and to develop appropriate supply chains to ensure supply via recycling, resulting in more sustainable production of plastics from a life cycle perspective. Provided input on sustainability evaluation as CI (PI Prof Adisa Azapagic). Organisations involved included Imperial College, SIMS Group UK Ltd, Rural Services Scotland.
WRATE Peer Review, 2002-2005. Funded by the Environment Agency. The project involved conducting a peer review of the Environment Agency’s new LCA tool for waste management, coordinating input from external and internal experts on LCA and waste management (Project Manager: Dr Sarah Cowell).
Mass Balance of the Motor Industry, 2002-2004. Funded by Federation Internationale de l'automobile (FIA), Biffaward. The research was completed with TRL/Viridis and provided a complete picture of resource use in the UK automotive industry. The objective was to identify and support sustainable management of resources in the industry (roles: Project Manager, Technical Specialist).
