Personal Profiles

Mr Richard Peagam

Postgraduate Research Student

Biography:

Richard graduated from University of Wales Bangor in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Zoology with Marine Zoology completing a dissertation on the effects of the captive environment on Asian Elephants. In 2007 he graduated with an MSc (DIC) from Imperial College London in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation. His MSc dissertation was based on a field study in Thailand, investigating the effect of intensified rice farming on freshwater fishery biodiversity. During this time he also gained experience working on a conservation project working with Nile Crocodiles in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. In 2008 Richard began working for the Environment Business Management Organisation of the technology company Hewlett Packard.

Richard is supervised by Dr Lauren Basson BSc (Chem Eng), MSc (Chem Eng), PhD and Professor Chris France BSc, MSc, PhD.

Research:

Richard started on the PhD programme at the University of Surrey in April 2009. Richard project manages Hewlett Packard’s partnership with the FP7 funded EU consortium ZeroWIN and is the main researcher for HP over a number of work packages. The aim of ZeroWIN is to examine and develop new, innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries. Richards PhD project will be conceptually similar to the ZeroWIN work, focusing on the IT industry. Considering the potential to reuse and recycle Electronic and Electrical Equipment, the traditional linear model for manufacture and use, concluding with the end of products life and disposal, is obsolete. The end of primary use should not signify the end of the manufacturing network, rather an opportunity to reprocess and reintegrate the materials back into the supply chain or to propagate resource cascades.

Research will be in the context of the developing field of Industrial Ecology. The fundamental goal of the project is to illustrate material flow at end of life as an extension of the manufacturing network, critically examining it from a sustainability perspective, with a view to developing viable end of use solutions. This platform will be used to map the flows of materials and identify the parties responsible for them. Outputs will include strategy advice for manufacturers of EEE and policy recommendations.
